John the Evangelist – as Saint of the Heavenly Court
Depicted together with all the other saints (in iconographic subjects such as the Doomsday), or in less numerous groups, even represented alone, as in patron or votive icons, St. John the Evangelist is generally presented in a frontal posture, clad, according to the Ancient tradition, in tunic and chiton. He is depicted as an elderly, grey-haired and bearded man. In most of the cases he is holding a shut codex – a reference to his work, but sometimes he is reading from his Gospel. He may be represented either standing, or as a bust within a medallion. More0over than not, the character is accompanied by its symbol – the Eagle.
