A wealth of historical, cultural and commercial assets are today at risk of loss within the next years, due either to manuscripts deterioration, equipment obsolescence and inappropriate management of manuscripts digitized collections.

Tasks carried out by the BYZANTION partners address issues such as integrative preservation (a “workflow” of formal documents including sources, their structure and descriptions, annotations) for high-risk medieval manuscript collections, metadata extraction, storage, iconographic virtual canon definition, secure interaction, rights management and effective delivery systems for end-users.

The starting point for the project's work will be data harvesting and management of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine (5th -19th cent.) manuscripts collections in digital format in order to obtain an overview of the functional requirements for the informatics tools and services to provide an iconographic virtual canon (images pertaining of a common feature defined by a subject keyword could be displayed, and analyzed against a minimal standard common denominator image) following:
• Domain definition and modeling by iconographic virtual canon*: a web and software tool for management of virtual iconographic representations and digitized graphic documents.
• Long term preservation: fast, affordable tools for manuscripts collections and an information system for preservation management in order to make collections of documents (manuscripts) in Romania better known and preserved;
• Archive: web-guide and software tools for planning storage and quality insurance system in order to maintain the diversity of manuscript and linguistic heritage to enhance cultural exchanges in the European region;
 • Curation & Collaboration: an integrated tool for building-up a metadata base of manuscript descriptions with their digitized versions, an export system for delivering preservation results to archives and similar databases in order to involve local populations, in particular young people, in the renewal of interest for written and linguistic heritage through dynamic and adapted activities, in the spirit of encounters and exchanges of European cultures;
