Matthew the Evangelist - as Saint of the Heavenly Court
The character is seen either together with all the other saints (in subjects such as The Doomsday) or in less numerous groups, even alone (as in patron or votive icons). St. Mathew is generally presented in a frontal position, clad, according to the ancient tradition, in tunic and chiton. He is depicted as an elderly man, grey-haired and bearded.
Usually he is holding a shut codex – his work, but sometimes, the Evangelist could be seen reading from his Gospel. The character is represented standing or as a bust within a medallion. Moreover than not, the Evangelist is accompanied by his symbol – the Angel.
