Luke the Evangelist as Saint of the Heavenly Court

Depicted together with all the saints (in iconographic subjects as the Doomsday) or in less numerous groups  and even represented alone, as in patron or votive icons, St. Luke is generally presented in a frontal position, clad, according to the Ancient tradition, in tunic and chiton. He is depicted as an elderly, grey—haired bearded man. In most of the cases he is holding a shut codex – a reference to his work, but sometimes he is reading from his Gospel. He may be represented either standing, or as a bust within a medallion. Moreover than not, the character is accompanied by its symbol – the Ox.
