Mark the Evangelist – as Saint of the Heavenly Court
Depicted together with all the other saints (in iconographic subjects such as the Doomsday), or in less numerous groups, even represented alone, as in patron or votive icons, St. Mark is generally presented in a frontal position, clad, according to the Ancient tradition, in tunic and chiton. He is depicted as a mature, bearded man. In most of the cases he is holding a shut codex – a reference to his work, but sometimes he is reading from his Gospel. He may be represented either standing, or as a bust within a medallion. Moreover than not, the character is accompanied by its symbol – the Lion.
