Saint Gregory of Dekapolis

A monk, hermit and thaumaturge, an indefatigable traveler and a fierce defendant of icons during the apex of the iconoclast period, Gregory is ordained late in his life. Usually, in Christian art, he appears in individual portraits, represented frontally, either standing or bust. He is depicted as a mature man with gray hair, a thin beard and ascetic features. Gregory is clad in liturgical or monastic vestments, wearing a kamilavka and a cassock, under which the epitrachelion is visible. He may hold different objects like a cross, an open scroll of parchment, or the Gospel, but frequently he is blessing with his right hand.
