The Descent of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost)
The iconographic representation of the Pentecost implies a minimal, at least, architectural background, against which the group of the apostles and the Holy Virgin are usually depicted standing. There are also versions in which the characters are seen in other postures, sitting or kneeling. The focus of the scene is pointed towards the Holy Spirit, descending from Heaven as a dove surrounded by light rays. The apostles may be represented either frontally or profile but always the frontal figure of the Holy Virgin is placed in the centre of the group, in a praying posture, her arms either in the orant position or crossed. She is looking towards the Skies, waiting for the miracle to happen, or looking towards the onlooker as if inviting him to spiritually share the moment.
