The Virgin with Child Enthroned

In Byzantine and Post-Byzantine art The Virgin Enthroned with Child is a frequently illustrated theme, present in monumental art, icon painting and illuminated manuscripts. In basic representations, the Virgin Enthroned with Child is depicted against a neutral background (usually gold). The throne is a simple structure, almost completely hidden by the Virgin’s garment. The Virgin is seen frontally or semi-profile, holding the Child in her arms.

However, in the traditional representation of the theme the Virgin and Child are seen, seated on a magnificent throne, placed above several steps and highly adorned. An angel, standing or within a medalion, is placed on each side of the Virgin. In more complex compositions the angels could be accompanied by a pair of saints, prophets or donors.
