The Flight to Egypt
The iconographical theme “The Flight to Egypt” is based on the Gospel, namely Matthew 2:14.
In its basic structure, the canon presents the Holy Family on the background of a sketchy landscape. The Virgin is shown riding a mule, frequently holding the Child in her arms, although there are representations in which St. Joseph is holding the Child.
In more elaborate variants, the landscape is more complex and representative and secondary characters are also present such as the servant or servants who accompany the Holy Family. In most of the cases, the Land of Egypt is symbolically depicted like a citadel.
