St. Joseph's Bewilderment
The theme of "St. Joseph's Bewilderment", better known as St. Joseph's (First) Dream, is based on the Gospel, namely Matthew 1:18-24.
Iconographically, most of the representations of this theme are focused on the scene of the revealing dream, depicting Joseph like an elderly man, fallen asleep while an angel is revealing him the Miracle of the Incarnation. In the early variants, the scene is individually treated, showing St. Joseph lying on a more or less clearly sketched bedding. In later variants, the sitting posture of the St. Joseph, supporting the head in his arms, is preferred.
